AC Prices in India May Rise 5–15% as Costs Climb Before Summer

AC Prices in India Set to Rise as Costs Climb Before Summer
Air conditioners in India are likely to become more expensive just as temperatures begin to climb.
Manufacturers say prices of room air conditioners could rise between 5% and 15% in the coming months. The increase comes as companies face rising costs for key materials and new efficiency regulations.
The price revisions are expected to roll out between February and April, shortly before the peak summer sales season when demand for cooling appliances typically surges.
Industry executives say the increase is unavoidable.
Copper Costs and Weak Rupee Drive Manufacturing Expenses
One of the biggest factors behind the price hike is the rising cost of copper, a key material used in compressors, coils and electrical components inside air conditioners.
Manufacturers are also facing higher import costs as the Indian rupee weakens against the US dollar. Many components used in air conditioners are sourced from overseas markets.
Freight and logistics expenses have also risen due to global supply chain disruptions.
Together, these pressures have pushed manufacturing costs higher across the industry.
Several major brands, including Daikin, Voltas, Blue Star, LG, Haier and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, have already announced price adjustments across multiple models.
New Energy Rules Make ACs More Efficient — and Costlier
Another important factor is a new set of energy-efficiency norms introduced by India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
The revised star-rating system requires air conditioners to meet stricter efficiency standards starting in 2026.
To meet these requirements, companies have had to redesign products using more advanced compressors and cooling systems.
Industry executives say the new models deliver better energy savings but also cost more to manufacture.
Some companies have already started implementing the increases.
For example, Daikin plans to raise prices by up to 12%, depending on the model. Other brands have announced increases of around 7–10% for certain energy-efficient models.
Demand Expected to Stay Strong Despite Higher Prices
Despite the price increases, manufacturers remain optimistic about sales this year.
India’s air conditioner market continues to grow rapidly as incomes rise and heatwaves become more frequent.
Industry leaders expect a particularly strong season if summer temperatures remain high.
Some estimates suggest the sector could see double-digit growth in 2026, driven by first-time buyers and demand for energy-efficient appliances.
A Growing Market Facing Rising Costs
India remains one of the fastest-growing markets for air conditioners, although household penetration is still relatively low compared with other Asian countries.
This means demand is expected to keep rising in the long term.
However, manufacturers say balancing affordability with energy efficiency will remain a challenge as raw material prices fluctuate and new environmental standards come into force.
For consumers planning to buy an air conditioner this summer, the message from the industry is clear: prices are likely to rise before the heat arrives.
