TRUMP MOVES TO RESTRICT BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP IN THE US

US President Donald Trump has signed two new executive orders aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and stopping what his administration calls “birth tourism.” The White House announced the orders on August 6, 2026.

One order seeks to limit automatic US citizenship for certain children born in the country, including some children connected to foreign governments, international organisations and groups classified by the administration as terrorist organisations. The second order directs officials to take action against people who travel to the US specifically to give birth and obtain citizenship for their child.

The move comes after the US Supreme Court ruled on June 30 in Trump v. Barbara. The White House says the new orders were written with that ruling in mind, while legal experts and immigrant-rights groups say the new restrictions are likely to face further court challenges.

Under the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment, people born in the United States generally receive US citizenship, with limited existing exceptions. Trump's earlier attempt to broadly restrict birthright citizenship was rejected by the Supreme Court.

The latest orders therefore do not simply end birthright citizenship for everyone born in the US. Instead, they target specific categories and the practice of travelling to the country specifically to give birth. Their final legal effect remains subject to ongoing court challenges.
