LPG Cylinder Price Hike: Opposition Slams Centre Over Inflation

LPG Cylinder Price Hike Sparks Political Row as Opposition Slams Centre
India’s LPG cylinder price hike has triggered sharp political criticism. Opposition parties accuse the central government of adding to inflation pressures on households.
The criticism followed a nationwide increase in cooking gas prices announced on March 7. Opposition leaders said the move will further strain household budgets already facing rising living costs.
LPG Cylinder Price Hike Raises Cooking Gas Costs
The LPG cylinder price hike increased the cost of a standard 14.2-kg domestic cylinder by ₹60 across India. The price revision took effect immediately.
As a result, the price of a domestic cylinder in Delhi rose from ₹853 to ₹913. Similar increases were reported in major cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Commercial LPG cylinders also became costlier. The price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder increased by ₹115 nationwide.
This change will affect restaurants, hotels, and small businesses that rely heavily on LPG for daily operations.
Opposition Calls Move “Inflation Whip”
Meanwhile, opposition leaders strongly criticized the decision. They argued the government is placing additional financial pressure on ordinary citizens.
Some leaders described the move as “cracking the whip of inflation on the public.” The comment reflects growing political tensions over rising fuel and living costs.
The Congress party also targeted the prime minister, accusing the government of increasing the financial burden on families.
In a social media statement, the party said the price rise directly impacts household budgets and small businesses already struggling with higher expenses.
Why LPG Prices Increased
Energy market factors also played a role. Global fuel prices have risen sharply due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
India depends heavily on imported LPG. In fact, about 85–90% of LPG imports come from the Middle East. Supply disruptions and rising energy costs have therefore pushed prices higher.
Because of these pressures, oil marketing companies revised domestic LPG prices after nearly a year without major changes.
Impact on Households and Businesses
The LPG price increase may significantly affect household spending. Cooking gas is a daily necessity for millions of families across India.
Restaurants and small eateries could also face higher operating costs. Consequently, food prices may rise if businesses pass the additional costs to consumers.
However, the government continues to provide ₹300 subsidy per cylinder for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This subsidy applies to up to 12 refills per year.
Growing Inflation Debate in India
The LPG price hike has intensified the broader debate over inflation in India. Fuel and cooking gas prices often influence the cost of living across sectors.
As political reactions grow louder, the issue is likely to remain a major topic in upcoming policy discussions.
For many households, however, the immediate concern remains simple: managing daily expenses as cooking gas becomes more expensive.
